3 million homeless in Pakistan

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Lori Funderburk, BGR’s international prayer strategist, writes:

The worst flooding in Pakistan’s history has carried away the lives of over 1,600 people.  The disaster caused by the monsoon rains has affected more than 20 million people, leaving at least 3 million homeless.  The country’s agricultural sector has suffered losses amounting to nearly $3 billion and UN officials say nearly $500 million will be needed for eliminating the aftermath of this calamity.

The greatest concern right now is that people’s supplies of drinking water have been contaminated by the flood waters.  Risks are mounting of outbreaks of various infections.  BGR personnel are on the ground in Islamabad, assessing how the immediate needs of the people can be met.

Pray for the people of Pakistan.  For many of them, things will get worse before they get better.  Pray for our national partners to have the energy they need and to get needed rest.  Pray that we will be able to effectively get help to many who need it.

You can help by giving to the Pakistan Disaster Response Fund.

Pakistan prayer alert

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

This request from Lori Funderburk, BGR’s international prayer strategist:

In the past ten days, Pakistan has been hit by the largest flood in a century. [photos]  Nearly 12 million people have been affected by the flood. Over 1,500 people have died and another 1,500 are still missing. Government reports that more than half a million homes have been destroyed or severely damaged.  Many towns and villages are isolated because of the destruction of the bridges over the rivers.  A full assessment will not be easy or quick.

Because of your gifts to the World Hunger Fund, BGR partners were able to act immediately to send assistance.  Thousands of people are being fed each day in areas of Pakistan that are some of the most devastated and difficult to access. Please pray for the health and safety of our partners.  Pray for smooth coordination between partners and communities.

Heartbreaking photos from Pakistan

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

Pakistan is experiencing some of the worst flooding it has seen in over 80 years. Entire villages have been washed away, an early estimate of over 1,600 deaths so far and over 2 million displaced or otherwise affected. Not only is the immediate water damage causing havoc, the floods have inundated crop-producing areas, dealing a crippling blow to the agricultural-based economy and threatening a food crisis.

The Big Picture has some heartbreaking photos.

Tennessee flood update

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Flood damage assessment and cleanup continues in the Nashville area, home to Baptist Global Response offices. Mayor Karl Dean extended Davidson county’s State of Emergency for another seven days, May 10.

Heavy rains caused the Cumberland River, which runs through downtown Nashville, to swell out of its banks the weekend of May 1-2. The deaths of nine people are connected to the flooding and two men remain missing. Although the assessment is not yet complete, the city’s Emergency Management estimates the property damage from the flood at $1.56 billion.

If you would like to contribute to relief efforts in Tennessee, BGR will channel 100 percent of your donation to the Tennessee Baptist Convention’s disaster response ministry. Further information on how to help can be found at the Tennessee Baptist Convention’s disaster relief page or the North American Mission Board’s website.

India flood disaster prompts emergency response

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

HYDERABAD, India – A vast multitude of poor villagers in southern India are trekking back to washed-out homes and ruined farmlands after the worst rains in 100 years set off devastating floods in early October.

Southern Baptist field partners are assessing needs and preparing an emergency response for some of the estimated 1.5 million people who are leaving relief camps to see what, if anything is left of their homes, said Francis Horton, who with his wife, Angie, directs work in Central and South Asia for Baptist Global Response.

“Local partners tell me conditions are very bad and it appears the principal needs right now are emergency food and water,” Horton said. “Please pray for the affected people in this area to get the relief they need. The state of Karnataka has been a focal point for persecution of Christians this past year.”

About 300 people are confirmed dead and thousands more are missing in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka states, according to news reports. The floods came just as many farmers had planted winter crops – much of which now has been washed away or damaged. To compound the problem, family food stores were destroyed with their homes, leaving many people with nothing to eat.

The area had been suffering from months of drought before the week of torrential downpours that caused the flooding.

“We’re able to respond quickly in emergencies like this because Southern Baptists have given so generously to their World Hunger Fund and disaster response. They are truly people who care about people in need,” said Jim Brown, BGR’s U.S. director. “With so many disasters in recent weeks, we hope they will make an extra effort to reach out to the millions of people in India, Indonesia, and the Philippines who need to experience the compassion of Jesus Christ in their time of need.”

Updates on the relief effort will be available at gobgr.org, along with information on how to give to Southern Baptist disaster response and the World Hunger Fund.
