Fighting hunger in Sudan

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Last year in a very rural area in Southern Sudan, there was very little rainfall and most of the crops failed. This area also experienced some tribal fighting that left it with burned buildings, total destruction of any food supplies, and a displaced population of nearly 10,000 living in the bush.

BGR partners are intending to reach approximately 5,000 families in and around this area with much needed food supplies. They will distribute the supplies through local churches there. Pray for wisdom and compassion as the church leaders minister to hurting families affected by the recent violence and the hunger situation.

Haiti: New areas of work in areas of great need

Friday, February 26th, 2010

The Direction for Civil Protection (DCP) estimates that 222,517 people died in Haiti following the Jan. 12 earthquake, an increase of 5,000 people since the organization’s report a week ago.

Currently, the most pressing needs continue to be shelter and sanitation. There is still rubble to be removed and suitable land has to be found for the construction of transitional shelter.

The Dominican Republic Baptist Convention (CBD) is partnering with four Haitian Baptist churches in Port-au-Prince and extending assistance to 16 other Haitian Baptist churches with emergency aid to help in their respective communities. There will be six distributions (one distribution every two weeks) of food, hygiene products and tarpaulins.

Volunteers from the United States are needed to help in packaging and delivering the goods. They are also needed to work in selected churches with clean up. Pray that communities will be receptive to a touch of God’s love through this disaster response. Pray for distributions to be fair and safe to those that have not yet received assistance.

Southern Baptist volunteer teams heading to new sites in Haiti include a medical team from Nebraska, a student team from Georgia and a medical team with professionals from various states. Baptist Global Response has identified projects that meet short-term needs with a big-picture perspective. Pray for BGR and partners who are trying to implement these projects. Ask God to give them wisdom and guidance as they work in Haiti.

Fighting hunger in Chad

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

The fundamental problems in Chad are poor healthcare, poverty, malnutrition, lack of understanding of basic sanitary practices and physical basis of disease. Without intervention, the people will continue in a state of poor physical health and malnutrition.

BGR partners are beginning a project that will provide training for gardening. The initial food plants are perennials so seed is bought only once and will provide plants that will last from five to seven years. The goal is for Chadians to grow, obtain and utilize food in a healthy manner. Classes will also include water conservation, composting, and hygiene.

Will you pray for this project as it begins? Ask God to give wisdom to those who are initiating it.

Making a difference for hungry people

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

A ministry partner has posted this brief video to communicate the urgency of the hunger problem in Kenya and the critical role played by gifts to the Southern Baptist World Hnger Fund. One hundred percent of every dollar given to the WHF is used to meet hunger needs. World Hunger Sunday is Oct. 11.

Hunger is a very real problem all through the drought stricken Rift Valley region of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Thanks to the generous gifts of Southern Baptists to the World Hunger Fund, BGR partners are able to plan hunger relief projects to help alleviate some of the suffering. God is blessing these efforts. Pray for good rains this next season. Pray for God to strengthen people in these food distribution efforts.

A new food shipment for Zimbabwe’s hungry families

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Southern Baptists continue to provide urgently needed assistance to families suffering in Zimbabwe’s unprecedented economic catastrophe. As of December 2008, the inflation rate was estimated at an unfathomable 516 quintillion percent — the highest ever recorded. The only goods available in stores are priced in foreign currency that ordinary citizens do not have. Those who do have some money in the bank are limited to withdrawals too small to purchase food.

A new phase of food distribution was launched in mid-March, sending 45-pound boxes of staple items to 5,000 of Zimbabwe’s neediest families.  Each box includes food staples like rice, oil, salt, powdered milk, corned beef, beans, etc., to help families stave off starvation.

This next week, enough food to make 1,800 food parcels should arrive in the country.  Please pray for the border crossing and distribution. This will be the last of the approved food parcels that we have set up from the current project. Pray that BGR and partners will have wisdom concerning the next step.

Also, please consider making a contribution toward this project. $90 provides food for a family for one week.  For more information visit http://www.gobgr.org and click on the “Giving” tab.
