Damien and Bigarade

By Thomas Ogens, Haitian Building Supervisor
Damien and Bigarade were very miserable little communities. There were not a lot of houses. There was a large void, but there were a few plantations of sugarcane and plantains. After the earthquake, the problem became very bad. Most of the houses were broken or fallen down. These people lived in tents; living was difficult. There were no jobs. Almost every day those in tents just waited for something…anything…rice, water. There were no businesses in the community. Nothing. But then, the organization BGR came to Damien and Bigarade. Sam York from BGR came; people begged him for houses. Sam told them to pray for a building project to be done here.
When the BGR building project started, it was like when Jesus came to Jerusalem! It was like deliverance, a dream. The people were so happy! But it was not a dream, it was reality!
Today, in Damien and Bigarade, 95% of the families have a house! A lot of people have learned to be masons and carpenters. A lot of Haitians do not like to work, but with BGR, they work! BGR created a lot of jobs. The people began earning money. With this money, the kids could go to school. The people started new small businesses in the community. Today, Damien and Bigarade are new communities thanks to God and BGR and “President Sam”. We will never forget BGR and Sam. By God’s grace and their help, development of these communities have soared and has been exceptional. These people would never get a house-probably would take over 10 years! But Praise the Lord!!! BGR came and helped us. Amen
