BGR partners making impact in Kenya.
The Horn of Africa’s long-term cycles of severe hunger have been sharpened by decades of failed crops, economic crises and climatic changes, and the area’s people now are suffering through the worst drought since 1951. The drought has driven up food prices and weakened livestock, thus increasing malnutrition, hunger and famine.
The United Nations estimates about 770,000 people have fled to refugee camps and about $1.3 billion will be needed to address the crisis in the Horn and neighboring countries in eastern Africa. Southern Baptist hunger projects in the Horn and eastern Africa have totaled more than $250,000 just in the past two years, and Southern Baptists now are mobilizing to meet even more of the need among the 11 million people estimated to be at risk.
Donations to the World Hunger Fund will help provide food relief to families in the Horn of Africa suffering in this crisis. Baptist Global Response works with national partners and humanitarian workers on the ground to design projects with complete accountability for the use of funds. Every dollar donated to the World Hunger Fund is used 100 percent to help hungry people.
Relief continues in the Horn of Africa through BGR.
Michael Elliott was deeply moved when he heard 29,000 Somalian children under age 5 had died in three months.
Sarah stands in line and watches as the village elder doles out the food, meticulously counting each scoop per family.
Living in the middle of a famine is hard. There’s not enough food or water for anyone. Don and Lucy Sullivan make tough decisions about how to distribute relief in African villages. How do you decide who is the hungriest when everyone is hungry — including your friends!
Beyond the hundreds of thousands of people who have died and at least 12 million who are threatened by the disaster, the long-term side effects will affect families—and even countries—for at least 10 years
More than half of Somalia’s population—roughly 3.7 million people, including 400,000 children—is at risk as Somalia enters the fourth month of a devastating famine.
Southern Baptist famine relief efforts are gearing up in the Horn of Africa, and mobilizing support for those efforts has become a bit easier with the posting of a downloadable multimedia slideshow on the crisis.
The UN estimates there are now 12.4 million affected by the crisis.
Southern Baptists face a “red alert” crisis in their World Hunger Fund, just as a massive drought/famine cycle threatens almost 11 million people in the Horn of Africa, a Southern Baptist humanitarian leader announced July 25.
Southern Baptists already are at work with relief efforts in the Horn of Africa, where drought and famine are endangering the lives of almost 11 million people.
When it comes to engaging a world in need, we value prayer above everything else. But Jesus specifically commanded his followers to "Go," and Baptist Global Response (BGR) encourages God's people to personally take the love of Christ to people in need. Each project described below includes contact info to learn more about how volunteers can help. General information about volunteering through BGR can be obtained by e-mailing info@gobgr.org.
Pray for the families in Sub-Saharan Africa who suffer constantly from malnutrition. The possibility of famine is never more than a few months away. The late rains in 2011 caused harvests to be much lower than normal. Pray for early rains on the crops that have already been planted. Pray for those who will be meeting needs as families run out of food and food prices skyrocket. Ask God to begin to stir in the hearts of Southern Baptists to give to the World Hunger Fund and BGR's Africa Famine Relief Fund.
On Monday, Oct. 24, BGR partners will begin food distribution in northern Kenya. Pray that the roads will be passable for trucks bringing the food in and that distributions will be safe and orderly. Pray that those receiving food will be blessed with good nutrition and that rains which have begun will continue through the rainy season bringing good grazing for animals and a good harvest for crops.
We encourage people to pray for those in need. Pray that the rains will come on time this year. Typical rainy and growing season begins in September and October. The sad news is that even if the rains are good this year and start on time, there are still months of hunger until the next harvest. Pray for God to meet the needs of the hungry.
A drought combined with the rising price for food and fuel has created a crisis in Somalia and parts of the Horn of Africa. Over 10 million people have been affected including more than a half a million refugees. The lack of rain has made for poor crops and weakened livestock. In these areas there is little access to food and what food is available is too costly for most. Pray that God would send much needed rain to this area.
Sarah Salesa,* a grandmother of 11, struggles to feed her family during the drought. A food distribution, provided by the World Hunger Fund, demonstrated God’s love for Sarah’s village – but the supplies will last her family only a few days.
Children are the most vulnerable during the Horn of Africa famine, the region's worst food crisis in two decades. An estimated 13.3 million people at risk of starvation, and UNICEF believes that, without intervention, 320,000 children will die during
