Care for the dying
Kentucky church makes a difference for people dying of AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa

We need your help to continue this vital ministry!
Baptist Global Response has made a significant change in the way the In-Home Care Kit project is being conducted. The logistics of shipping kits domestically from so many parts of the country has proven to be prohibitively expensive and a challenge for BGR’s limited staff to handle.
The change we are making is to recruit IHCK “champion” churches to take on the challenge of packing containers of buckets. These congregations are handling the promotion, collection, etc., in their area and will prepare the containers for BGR to ship overseas.
We are not doing away with the In-Home Care Kit project. It is a wonderful demonstration of God’s love for people in desperate need. For now, the project will go forward as “champions” step forward to help collect and ship buckets here in the US.
We are grateful for your partnership in this important ministry to people struggling with terminal illness and their caregivers. Please pray for the Lord to move in the hearts of churches and individuals to accomplish his purposes through this project. If he speaks to you about helping—or if you know a congregation that could champion this project—please let us know.
If your group has already packed kits and has been awaiting shipping information, please e-mail bgrbuckets@gobgr.org or call toll-free (866) 974-5623.
What is an In-Home Care Kit?
The BGR In-Home Care Kit is a compilation of medical and hygiene supplies to help those with terminal illnesses. Items in this kit will make the caregivers’ tasks much easier, but more importantly, will ease the suffering of the ones affected by the illness.
BGR’s In-Home Care Kit meets a profound need overseas, and humanitarian workers are asking for more of them than ever!
To date, more than 4,700 kits have been sent to South Africa, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Guinea and Niger. For 2011, we have a full 6,000 requests from our ministry partners!
We’re going to really need your help to reach that goal!
By putting together at least one kit, you will help provide a physical and spiritual touch to those in sub-Saharan Africa who are dying from AIDS and other illnesses. Our local partners in Africa will distribute the buckets in a way that gives dignity and hope to each family receiving a kit.
How it works
A church or group decides how many kits they want to pack and then mobilizes members to collect the items needed. Often they enjoy packing the kits together. One of the IHCK “champions” (listed below) ships the completed kits to A&O Services, which handles the overseas delivery. Once a container-load of kits is ready to go, BGR takes care of getting them overseas and in the hands of those who need them.

SWEETWATERS, South Africa –– Walk the dusty paths of Sweetwaters, a rural community nestled in the hills of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, and you see death everywhere you look.
NORCROSS, Ga. –– That non-descript, five-gallon bucket in your garage once contained paint. Now it’s a catch-all for rags and used brushes. The last thing you’d call it is “precious.”
NASHVILLE, Tenn. –– Relief from suffering. A firsthand experience of Christ’s compassion. Hope for a new life free of pain . . .
When it comes to engaging a world in need, we value prayer above everything else. But Jesus specifically commanded his followers to "Go," and Baptist Global Response (BGR) encourages God's people to personally take the love of Christ to people in need. Each project described below includes contact info to learn more about how volunteers can help. General information about volunteering through BGR can be obtained by e-mailing info@gobgr.org.

NHLANGANO, Swaziland – Some myths about HIV/AIDS put people at greater risk of infection.
Some myths multiply the rate at which the virus spreads.
But the most destructive myths are the ones that keep God’s people from sharing the Good News of His love with people in need.

In-Home
Care Kit Project
Please join our church in prayer, participation, and giving to ease the suffering of those affected by terminal illnesses.
This 5-gallon bucket is not just a container for the kit but will be used for a variety of essential tasks. Most recipients live in rural settings where the bucket will protect food from rodents and insects, as well as spoilage. It will be used to carry and store water for cleaning, cooking and bathing. It is a very practical and versatile item.
Those living with HIV/AIDS deal with humiliation, secrecy, isolation and death on a daily basis. One who works among these hurting people in South Africa said that poverty is their friend and death is their neighbor. What sad words! 42 million people are currently infected with HIV; another 14,000 people become infected every day. That is reason enough to pray.
To help you plan your assembly, it takes about an hour for one person and a team of two about 25 minutes to assemble one kit. If you have a large quantity, you may want to form an assembly line.
Please review the following carefully for any changes that have occurred for the 2011 In-Home Care Kit Project.
Baptist Global Response has researched and worked with partner organizations to determine the best resources to include in the kits. For uniformity in packing and shipping as well as customs approval in recipient countries, please only provide completed kits that match the detailed list. Varying kits and materials may delay shipments and may mean that the kits will not be accepted into a country.
