Global Hunger Relief
World Hunger Sunday Oct. 13, 2013
When Southern Baptists observe their annual World Hunger Sunday on Oct. 13, they will be called to act out the powerful love of Jesus, who the Bible says was "moved with compassion" for people in desperate need.
Scripture recounts several instances, like the one recorded in Matthew 14:14, when Jesus saw a large crowd, was moved with compassion for them, and took powerful action to meet their needs. The Greek word translated 'compassion' refers to tender emotions, deeply felt feelings, or a deep churning in a person's spirit. We might call it "gut wrenching."
That kind of compassion compels a response, and Baptist Global Response offers multiple ways to get involved. You can discover some of the avenues by clicking on the Updates, Donate, Volunteer, Pray, and Media tabs above. You also can engage the hunger issue by planning to participate in World Hunger Sunday on Oct. 13, using the resources and suggested listed below.
Since its inception in 1974, Southern Baptists have given more than $235 million through their World Hunger Fund to meet hunger needs both at home and abroad. In 2010, more than $4.5 million was given, but as recently as 2005 Southern Baptists were giving $6 million a year to the offering.
Hunger needs have not subsided, however. Nor has God's love for hungry people diminished. The Southern Baptist World Hunger Fund reaches hungry people in the farthest reaches of the world, helping families survive disaster and famine, providing clean water, improving health and nutrition -- and all along helping people discover how to have hope and purpose in life.
Below is a list of resources, drawn from several different Southern Baptist ministries, that you can use to help your church understand the hunger needs that claim thousands of lives each day - and mobilize them to make a life-changing difference in the lives of suffering people. We pray Southern Baptists will continue to demonstrate that they are a people who care for people in need. We believe we have barely begun to see all God wants to do to help a hungry world experience the life-changing power of his love.
Clicking the Resources tab above will take you to a range of useful resources -- videos and a prayer guide -- for promoting World Hunger Sunday and mobilizing your congregation or other group to engage the issue of hunger.
World Hunger 101, a two-hour churchwide event that explores the issue of world hunger. The downloadable event pack includes suggestions about ways to introduce the topic and how to consolidate a full understanding of issues related to hunger. Each age-level session plan includes promotion ideas and hunger project ideas. World Hunger 101 is available for download at www.wmustore.com, where you also can find the popular World Hunger Bread Bank.
A wide variety of resources also can be found at www.worldhungerfund.com, the homepage for the Southern Baptist World Hunger Fund. Among the free downloadable resources available are bulletin inserts, the World Hunger Fund logo, mini-poster ads, videos and a PowerPoint presentation, soup can labels to create receptacles for WHF donations, a mini coloring book depicting real people whose lives are being touched through Southern Baptist hunger ministries, and a drama script that can be used to educate church groups on the Christian mandate to minister to the poor. The site also has low-cost items such as "Impact World Hunger," a four-page publication, sized for easy placement in most church bulletins, that also can be used as a stand-alone informational handout.
The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission's website, erlc.com/hunger, provides topical articles on biblical directives for combating hunger and poverty and how to begin a hunger ministry, as well as sermons like "Do Justice to the Afflicted and Needy."
Domestic hunger issues are important too. You can find an excellent array of resources on combating hunger in North America at www.namb.net/hunger.
World hunger awareness and fundraising event ideas
Here are a few ideas to help you get started planning a successful world hunger awareness and/or fundraising event for your church, Bible study, youth group and/or community. Incorporate your own creativity to suit your group's interests. (Click on the names of the activities to download.)
1. f30 Weekend – A fun way to help people, young and old, become aware of and impact world hunger. This event is also great for team building, prayer, fasting, college campuses, or weekend retreats.
2. Harvest Festival – Incorporate hunger awareness in your harvest festival. A variety of educational activities designed to help children better understand world hunger and what they can do to make a difference.
3. Hunger Meal – An activity that will help you focus on the lifestyle of many in our world and on their daily struggle for food.
4. Run for Their Lives – A 5k run to raise funds. Instead of “running for your life”, this is truly a race to “Run for Their Lives”. This is a great and simple idea to raise money and community awareness for world hunger.
5. Progressive Hunger Meal – A creative way to illustrate how challenging it is to deal with struggles many people around the world experience each and every day, including that of having a simple meal.
6. Box Social – Revisit a common way, used in pioneer days, to raise funds for causes such as World Hunger.
7. World Hunger speaker -- If you would like to request a speaker (a field practitioner) for your group's world hunger event or for a world hunger focused church service, please contact Jeff Palmer at email@example.com. We will do our best to accommodate your request.

A flash flood destroyed numerous homes in this Central Asian country. Seventeen people died and six were injured. BGR partners helped to alleviate some of the difficulties caused by the tragedy by providing food to nearly 300 families. Please continue to pray for the families that have lost loved one and are continuing to pick up the pieces after this tragedy.August 6th, 2013
BGR has been partnering with the Baptist Union of Zimbabwe in a nutritional program since January 2011. Initially the program involved providing food packets to 125 children and adults but has grown to 350 in the past year. The beneficiaries are either individuals living with HIV/AIDS or those greatly affected by the pandemic, such as child-headed households where parents have been lost to AIDS. The health of a majority of those receiving this support greatly improved over the course of the project – gaining weight and many feeling strong enough to return to school and work. Pray for this program to continue to heal the sick and reach those that are needy.March 7th, 2013

A drought in one Central Asian country destroyed the entire harvest in one area. Rain has been scarce for several years, but this past year was the worst, and people were having a hard time just surviving. BGR partners provided food parcels for 65 of the poorest families over six months, to help them get through the winter. Thank God generous donors had provided the resources needed to demonstrate God's love for these people in their time of need.February 18th, 2013
Flash floods swept through this Central Asian town and flooded the homes of 60 families. Because their homes are mostly made of mud, many of them collapsed or were damaged to the point of being unlivable. Coordinating with other organizations that supplied hygiene supplies and cooking sets, BGR partners provided food baskets, so families could focus on repairing their homes, instead of trying to find food. Please continue to pray for the recovery of those that lost their homes.January 11th, 2013
This project focused on a group of people in Thailand who are the poorest of the poor. Most of them have no means of producing their own food, and those who do often are forced to sell their produce to black market dealers, who extort them through contracts that require them to sell their produce at below market value. BGR partners provided food for the hungry and those headed toward significant hunger within the next month. School supplies were also purchased to educate the children in the evenings. Please continue to pray that these people will be provided for and be able to have better futures.December 11th, 2012
A severe storm with heavy sleet destroyed the rice harvest in one South Asian village. BGR partners distributed rice supplies to the affected families. As a result, the door is open for more opportunities for help people discover how to have lives of meaning and purpose. Please pray for these opportunities to open hearts to God's love.November 7th, 2012
Food is very scarce in one area of a Last Frontier country and students need a better diet so they can learn well. BGR partners will help feed 700 people over the course of a year. The food will ensure the students will not go hungry and will be able to participate in their classes and study. Ask God for more teachers to come to this school so more students can learn.October 16th, 2012
Partnering with local Baptist churches and other like-minded groups, this project provided food, medical care and other basic necessities for thousands of Egyptians, many of whom were struggling because of the weakened economy caused by the impact of the "Arab Spring" on tourism. Over 50,000 people were helped with food, over 6000 received medical treatment, 250 were given bedding and blankets, and dozens of others were helped with clothing, cooking equipment and basic job training. Continue to pray for the impact that this project is having on this people group.October 11th, 2012
This feeding program in Zimbabwe began in January 2011 and provided monthly food packets to 125 children and adults who registered at the local clinic. Now 350 food packets are being distributed and the health of the majority of people receiving this support has greatly improved over the duration of the feeding project. Pray that the families receiving this food will see the love of God for them. Pray for the continued financial support of this project.October 5th, 2012
In August, a poor neighborhood of Islamabad received international attention when a Christian girl was accused of burning pages of a holy book. Life in Ethiopia is difficult. Food is sometimes scarce, and health care inaccessible for most. BGR partners are providing one meal per week for up to 125 poor and aged people in one village. A medical program provides one clinic day per week for this village. Each of the three clinics sees 40 patients per week, 50 weeks of the year. Patients walk as long as five days to come to the clinic. Some sleep outside the clinic the night before to ensure they are among the first 50 patients to receive care the next day.March 1st, 2012
Pray that each bag of food distributed would bless the families that receive it. Pray that the partners in this project would be obedient and faithful to live out the love of Christ among the people. Pray that the Lord will reveal himself to these refugees, and that many would discover the abundant life he offers.February 9th, 2012
During rice harvest two months ago, there was a hailstorm that destroyed the standing rice fields in two Asian villages. BGR partners will help by providing rice to each of the homes affected. The world produces more than enough food to meet the needs of all its six billion people, yet 25,000 people die every day due to hunger and malnutrition. That is one life every 5 seconds. Pray that as BGR and partners distribute food parcels and kitchen sets, long‐term solutions will be developed so that the world’s food can reach those in need. Pray that those working in agricultural areas will find ways to make food more affordable for everyone.

How would you like to have an incredible emphasis to get your church aware and focused on the problem of world hunger and the Southern Baptist World Hunger fund? The idea is simple and uses visual representation to get your church more aware and involved in doing something about world hunger.
This project idea will help educate and involve your church in addressing world hunger issues. The idea is to get Sunday School/small groups in your church to begin talking and making pledges to “buy” something for a needy family in the world. They can purchase a water well for a community in Africa. They can “buy” a goat for a family in China. They can even provide a sewing machine for a widow in India.
100% of the World Hunger fund goes to help meet hunger needs.
